Character analysis of “Sniff”
“Sniff” is one of the two mice that live on cheese inside the “Maze”. It is vital for him to have access to this valuable resource, since this determines his ultimate survival and level of well-being.
“Sniff” uses the method of smelling the direction of cheese, which he then points to his friend, “Scurry” who uses his speed to run and find it.
Character analysis of “Scurry”
The other mouse of the story, “Scurry”, is an excellent cheese-hunting partner to “Sniff”, because the quick reaction of “Scurry” fits perfectly to the cheese-smelling talent of “Sniff”. The two mice do not waste their time on lengthy planning; they prefer to apply the simple and tested “trial-and-error” method. Although they do things the hard way, their quick actions saves them time and leads them to the “Cheese” faster.
Character analysis of “Hem”
“Hem” as a character is the ultimate representation of negative thinking when it comes to moving ahead and forgetting about a disastrous event that changed a prosperous and glorious past.
He is a human being and, as such, he feels that he is entitled to the right of a superior way of thinking and perceiving things, in comparison to the mice of the story. As a result, he gets stuck in a self-destructive persistence of not recognizing and accepting change.
Character analysis of “Haw”
“Haw” is the other human being in the story. He is the partner of “Hem” in their quest of the “Cheese”. He also gets the shock of his life when he comes before an empty cheese station, where cheese was in abundance just a while ago. However, he adopts a more analytical approach, accepting hard facts and looking for a way to escape this dead-end situation.
“Haw” is definitely a more flexible character than “Hem” and he represents the adaptability of humankind in various occasions of natural or manmade disaster. He realizes that life cannot be stopped; progress is the only alternative for those who wish to survive.
